probably a little late to comment, but i also like the first one, and i think this should be the logo for a new OS (sorry if that's not what you're going for...) it's really cool though!

Is the first one too much? Does the difference between the two even stand out?

I like the first design best...catches the eye but isn't overwhelming. It makes me think of a logo for a Native/Natural American organization.
